چکیده

Humans can perceive their spatial surroundings both by the visual and the auditory senses. Even though the auditory system has much lower spatial resolution, it can still serve as an alternative or supplementary information channel for the visual modality. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of conveying elaborate visual information by auditory patterns. A system is developed which transforms two-dimensional binary images into \auditory images". Such images are based on slow raster-scanning of a perceptual auditory surface around the subject while emitting sounds that correspond to the brightness level of the images at each location. The parameters involved in such a system are quantitatively investigated with respect to their eeect on performance. These parameters include resolution, level diierence, sound color contrast, speed, surface curvature, etc. The graphic percepts of synthetic auditory images which correspond to simple shapes are also analyzed. The experimental results show that sound localization can be used to convey visual information quite successfully for simple shapes and low resolution patterns.

Relative contributions of visual and auditory spatial representations to tactile localization.

Spatial localization of touch is critically dependent upon coordinate transformation between different reference frames, which must ultimately allow for alignment between somatotopic and external representations of space. Although prior work has shown an important role for cues such as body posture in influencing the spatial localization of touch, the relative contributions of the different sen...

Can Monaural Auditory Displays Convey Directional Information to Users?

The purpose of this study is to build a monaural auditory display to convey four pieces of directional information (upward, downward, rightward, and leftward) to users effectively and intuitively without the need for wearing headphones or preparing more than one speaker. We prepared five types of monaural auditory displays consisting of triangle wave sounds and conducted an experiment to invest...

Comparative Effect of Visual and Auditory Teaching Techniques on Retention of Word Stress patterns: A Case Study of English as a Foreign Language Curriculum in Iran

This study aimed at investigating the effect of visual (Cuisenaire Rods) and auditory nonsensical monosyllables using Pratt speech processing software as teaching techniques on retention of word stress. To this end, 60 high school participants made the two experimental groups of the study each having 30 students on the basis of their proficiency scores on KET (Key English Test). In one experime...

Multisensory space representations in the macaque ventral intraparietal area.

Animals can use different sensory signals to localize objects in the environment. Depending on the situation, the brain either integrates information from multiple sensory sources or it chooses the modality conveying the most reliable information to direct behavior. This suggests that somehow, the brain has access to a modality-invariant representation of external space. Accordingly, neural str...
